Chapter 3

The doorman held open the condo lobby doors. Daisy stepped inside, pulling Travis behind her. After their off-the-charts makeout session outside the Odyssey, they’d gathered their luggage and started the short trek around the block to her place. Other than being drenched, it’d been the best stroll she’d taken in a city she loved. She’d pointed to her favorite coffee shop and the best restaurant to grab crawfish. Told Travis about the farmer’s market and various local musicians who played daily on sidewalks, bringing culture and joy to the French Quarter. He’d listened as if she was the most important person in world. Nothing could compare to that moment. Except maybe their kiss.

Daisy titled her head in Travis’s direction. “We’re here. I live on the fifth floor.”

His gaze swept over the large plants and gold-plated elevators and antique tile floors, then he turned to face her. “If I’d known being a relationship coach paid so well, I’d chosen a different career,” he said, his voice lit with amazement, something she knew would vanish once he discovered her real reason behind having a such a swanky pad.

She waved a hand in the air. “Family money. I’m a trust fund baby, Travis.” She met his steady, hot gaze. “Still want to fuck me after knowing my dirty little secret?”

He licked his lips, then leaned in, brushing his mouth just below her earlobe. “Even more. I have a thing for high-thread-count sheets in my birthday suit.”

A thrill ran through her at the thought of him laid out naked in her bed. She was falling for his quick-witted company and she wasn’t sure if only a night would ever be enough. A tinge of jealousy settled in her gut at the idea of Travis in New York awarding someone else with the pleasantries of his humor and fine kissing skills. He softly touched her face as if he was reading her bizarre thoughts. A quiet moan fell from her lips. God, he had her looking so crazy in love, even if she knew the truth. She wasn’t.

She cupped his hand with hers. “Ready to go up?”

“Yes,” he said, looking deeply in her eyes. “Are you good? Still want me here?”

“I’m fine.” Her heart skipped a beat as she pressed her body to his. “I don’t normally invite guys back to my place. That’s all.”

Knowing that the last time she’d actually had someone in her bed was her ex-boyfriend, a man she’d dated for five years, sent an unsettling feeling through her. Their breakup had smacked her sideways. She’d never suspected his side gig, a woman on the west coast, who’d spent long nights at his hotel during his working trips. Her relationship had been perfection in her mother’s eyes. Rich elite bachelor anchored to another wealthy hire. But she was in charge now, and if she wanted Travis in her bed, not some meet-up at a hotel like usual, she could. She could lose herself in the moment. Practice what she preached.

The corner of his eyes pulled tighter as concern lined his brow.
